Well we’re back for the second installment.
This year it started with the death of my baby sunflower. I had two I started from seed indoors and they both transitioned beautifully, ready to bloom until one of them got cut down by Mr. Squirrel. I tried rescuing it but sometimes bandages can’t fix everything. My heart was broken and I wrote a poem.

You were taken away too soon,
Never to feel the summer heat.
I watched you grow from a seed,
Nurtured you with love and water.
Saw you stand against the wind,
And find your way to the sky.
You were standing tall, ready to blossom,
But you were brutally cut down by a selfish rodent.
You shall be sorely missed, sweet sunflower
I weep for you tonight as my heart breaks.
The other one narrowly escaped death. It managed to survive despite being chewed on. I moved it back to the porch. These attacks bring out the Thor in you, I tell ya!
[in Thor voice]…nah vermin you will not lay waste to my asgarden kingdom. For every sunflower
🌻thou taketh down, 10 more shall be planted in it’s place.

And this half-eaten sunflower 🌻 that is still alive by the power of the eternal flame.

So yes in the spot where I buried it, I planted sunflower seeds. Lots. I kept planting sunflowers of many varieties. I intended to have a sunflower army in the garden that the squirrels wouldn’t know what to do. Now, I’ve got really big sunflowers all over. Just waiting for them to open up!
These are my garden’s most wanted:
The Notorious ChiTown Rodent Gang
Mr. Squirrel
Guido
Tony
Lil’ Suzie
ScarJoe (he has scars on his fur body)
Yea you looking at me bro? Well, I’m looking at you.
In part 3, I think I’ll share the flower varieties I have this year or more animal stories. There are bunnies, birds AND rats in my yard too. Yep rats and yes they all have names. 😀
